How to decide if it's even worth getting a car?  (After all, there's many ways to travel).

Here's what I'd do:

1. list the ways you could move about how you need/want ...
2. ... put them in COLUMNS (perhaps in a simple spreadsheet)
3. list the aspects involved in those kinds of travelling ...
4. ... such as insurance; waiting around; MoT; deprecation; desire; hassle; reliability; comfort; socialising; employability; flexibility; spontaneity; "road tax"; fuel cost; upkeep cost; alternative uses for your money ... and put them in ROWS
5. you've now got a grid
6. move the rows around until they go most-to-least important (to you), top-bottom
7. estimate a number to put in each box, positive/negative and big/small ...
8. ... some numbers will be precise and financial, most won't
9. add up the totals for each column.

The column with the biggest positive number is the option you should choose.  If you don't like the result, repeat steps 6-9 (as often as you can be bothered).  If you get irritated, you've not given enough weight to your true desire.  If the answer IS "get a car" then read this next.  Simples :)
