A pair of pupils who wish to swap must be available in a phone call at the same time.  The time is pre-agreed by them.  The first pupil calls 0300 200 1122 option 1.  The second pupil need supply only booking reference number.  Neither pupil will know the other’s identify.  DVSA will email the two pupils to confirm the swap.  (Contact numbers will henceforth always be required when booking).  Bots will thereby be blocked, and test-swap apps should also soon fade away.

ADIs can use OBS to preclude certain dates as unavailable to students.  From c.18 May, OBS will show only tests booked before 12 May.  After 12 June swaps will be geographically limited.  DVSA might in future release test slots at more helpful times than 6am.]]><![CDATA["Bring back buttons" in cars]]>Fri, 01 May 2026 00:00:00 GMThttps://www.trc11.com/my-news/bring-back-buttons-in-cars

]]><![CDATA[Driving test cheats]]>Wed, 29 Apr 2026 20:42:30 GMThttps://www.trc11.com/my-news/driving-test-cheatsDriving test cheating surged by 47% across England, Scotland, and Wales in the 12 months to September 2025 according to new data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) acquired by a Freedom of Information Request by the Press Association News Agency .  DVSA figures show a wide range of tactics being used to cheat the test – and the results of it are impacting waiting times for real learners – who are already struggling to book a slot.

Technology played a major role, with 1,113 incidents involving Bluetooth devices hidden on candidates to feed them answers during theory exams.  Impersonation also featured heavily, with 1,084 attempts to sit theory tests on behalf of someone else recorded, along with a further 647 cases where individuals tried to pose as another person for the practical test.

Over the same 12 month period, 96 people were prosecuted for cheating or attempting to impersonate a genuine test candidate.

The answer is ... nobody knows.  I estimate that it will take a few weeks before any change becomes visible.  App developers (or unscrupulous instructors) who have previously used 'borrowed' driving licence numbers to book up blocks of tests have been unable to continue doing so since 1 April.

But there are still many thousands of learners wanting a test, so demand will continue to outstrip supply.  DVSA staff from other areas are being brought in to act as examiners.  However, at the earliest, I think it will be autumn before much improvement in availability is seen.

From now on, of course, instructors can't book lessons: only learners can.
