Terms … of business
Here's what I expect of you and what you deserve from me, concerning lessons :
ELIGIBILITY
You must be at least 17 and show me a valid UK / NI provisional "Category B" driving licence. You must tell me about any change in entitlement to have tuition (e.g. your licence is revoked, or for medical reasons such as epilepsy), and any endorsements ("points"). |
EYESIGHT
You must meet the minimum requirement, meaning you can read a UK number plate from 20.5 m (67 ft). If you wear glasses / lenses to do that, you must wear them to drive.
FITNESS
I must agree you're fit to drive, unimpaired by drink, drugs, or acute tiredness. I can decline use of my car until you are.
HEALTH
You must tell me of any condition that may affect your driving: I may require you to tell the DVSA. If you're likely to be a danger to other road users, my responsibility to you and them (including DVSA examiners) means I wouldn't allow you to use my car for test.
CONTACT
I will use the phone number you give me to contact you, usually by text. If you write by email, I may use that address to send helpful links or illustrations but it's rare.
PERSONAL PRIVACY
Your mobile number and pick-up address are held within my iCloud account. Apple's data safeguards apply. I don't share them. I delete them a year after I last hear from you. Your pick-up road may appear in my online calendar (it helps me navigate to you and tell you my arrival time). Ask me to show your booking with a nickname if you prefer. I store basic detail of lesson dates, your progress, and payments, too. Also see "RECORDING", below. Concerning GDPR, see my ICO rating here.
PICK-UP (and drop-off)
I will collect you from the place we’ve agreed. I can leave you at any reasonable location reached within your lesson, or after it at my discretion. These don’t have to stay the same.
PUNCTUALITY
I will strive to arrive on time but may be affected by breakdown, accident, sudden illness or congestion. I will not charge you if I need to cancel, though regret I cannot be held responsible for your consequential loss (e.g. income or annual leave). I'll tell you if I'll be more than 5 minutes late. I will always ensure you receive your full time, on that lesson (if convenient) or later. However, if after 10 minutes you have not arrived, I reserve the right to leave but charge you (i.e for my travel cost and lost lesson income).
PAYMENT
Lessons should be paid before or on the day. I may charge you if later. Please use bank transfer or cash. My car is insured against damage while you drive but I may ask you to contribute to tyre or door repair if not using reasonable care.
CANCELLATIONS
If you wish to cancel a lesson, please text at least 4 hr before (I may charge if less). If I must cancel your lesson at short notice (due to illness, impasse, breakdown), I will offer you a preferential alternative time. If I similarly cannot attend test, I will advise you if practicable, and do what I can to help you take it. I'm not responsible for DVSA cancelling tests (staff illness, system problems, or bad weather), so please pay for time booked with me, then claim that money back from DVSA.
REFUNDS
If you don't take all your prepaid lessons I will refund the unused amount. I will refund your Test fee if the examiner cancels the Test due to the condition of my car, but otherwise at my discretion. I will use your preference for another Test date providing this does not seriously inconvenience other students.
RECORDING
I may ask your permission to photograph your driver's number on your driving licence. I may also invite you to be recorded, in-car, and send a link to a Private YouTube video so you can see your progress. I will delete a video of you if you ask, and will not make images of you Public without your permission.
PROFESSIONALISM
I will aim to get your driving consistently competent before recommending you sit the practical Test, because DVSA guidelines say you should not take it just "for the experience". This is even more important when waiting times are long. I cannot, of course, guarantee you'll pass: the ultimate choice to sit it is yours.
A lesson with me is a contract under these terms. Thank you for your understanding. Tim.
