Identify

Are you sure you can you spot an important sign, a roundabout, or a side-road?  To identify a road, look for:
Picture
  1. Traffic movements (including pedestrians) in/out, or waiting to turn
  2. Breaks in the line of trees, buildings, or parked cars beside you
  3. Breaks in the roadside kerb (not just a lowered kerb: that's a driveway)
  4. Curves in any road marking at the edge of the road
  5. Patches of light on the road surface
  6. Visible streetlight or name sign
To spot a sign, know their likely shapes and colours so you can seek them out. You’ll often need to respond before you reach them.  For roundabouts, look for traffic circulating and the blue "go left" circle sign, usually with chevrons underneath.

For both signs and roads, identify their presence BUT DON’T necessarily assess them straightaway. Gather context, then assess.
