Markings
Markings on the road are like punctuation, or stage directions for actors. For example, think of a Give Way line as a comma.
Because markings are on the surface of the road, it's hard to see them. It's worse when wet, or dark, or they're worn away by traffic. So, first, look ahead for any "vertical info" (= signs). |

As shown in The Highway Code, markings are either WHITE = guidance ; YELLOW = restriction ; or RED = prohibition. The colour (or texture) of the road does not change its legal meaning, but may be varied to draw your attention.
Don't drive over SOLID lines (unless it's an emergency), but cross BROKEN ones if necessary (e.g., to pass an obstruction). |
