How do you know just WHAT to look at, at what times?  Aim to watch out for things repeatedly in this order (1-6, 1-6, 1-6):

1. notice MOTION (especially anything coming closer)
   
2. identify ACTIVITY (lights on cars; people at the roadside; doors opening)
3. look far away for VERTICAL stuff (tree-line; buildings; especially traffic signs, 3m up)
4. look closer for HORIZONTAL stuff (lane or arrow markings; lines along the sides, 0m up!)
5. watch EDGES (of the road, and of obstructions)
6. notice road SURFACE (holes, puddles, oil, metalwork, dampness, anything loose)
