"Bad habits"
We've all got them. And we're constantly at risk of getting more. After all, life is sometimes a rush, so we've places to get to.
Good habits we instructors generally call "routines". That way, it sounds like we do them deliberately, for a reason. (A habit tends to be subconscious, without awareness of its [bad] consequences). Common bad habits among long-time drivers are : |
(1) not checking BEHIND (mirrors) before changing what your car's doing (speed; position; signals)
(2) travelling too CLOSE (to be able to stop, or pass, safely)
(3) going too FAST (for the environment or conditions)
(4) letting concentration wander (scenery; looking at phone; talking; daydreaming; ...air-guitar / enthusiastic sing-along)
You might think of others, often to do with technique. Like (5) staying above bite while braking, to make the car crawl while parking; (6) keeping left hand on gear lever; (7) using handbrake before stopped; (8) not keeping heels on floor, especially when moving foot between gas and brake. But it's unlikely that practice in your own car will set up habits we can't correct. Your extra practice will outweigh that.
