Writing
You start your journey. (You open the book). The roadscape ahead has some obvious features. (You read the opening paragraph; it paints a setting). Some features seem hidden or strange. (A mention of something odd could be a literary trick, a "Chekhov's gun"). As you move on, the things you move past change. (The context or background develops). Some road users loom close. (Certain characters catch your eye, demand more attention). So it goes on.
You don't know how your journey will go. After all, it's not just you making one out there. So, to help, use the punctuation of the road to help you read it, as if you were literally reading a story out loud. Slowly enough to avoid hiccups. |
