Many driving routines will appear familiar because rules of the road in Hong Kong and in the UK are similar. 完美的 ! However:
  • There are many roundabouts, of many types (“THIRD exit” and “FIRST exit” sound similar, but they mean “Exit 3” and “Exit 1”)
  • Road markings differ slightly (same colours)
  • Many quiet junctions have NO markings
  • Pedestrians can cross a road anywhere
  • More vulnerable road users often have priority at junctions
  • A crossroads means one road crosses another road
  • A “level crossing” is where cars and trains cross at the same level
  • A “ford” is where cars cross moving water
  • Pedestrian crossings include 'zebra' types, but 'green man' crossings in HK are either pelican, puffin, toucan, or pegasus types in UK (without stripes across road)
  • Traffic lights may be repeated further into a junction (that is, beyond the Stop line)
  • Traffic signs show distance in "yds" (yards; =0.9m) and "mi" (miles; =1.6km), and height in "ft / in" (feet; =0.3m, and inches; =2.5cm)
  • It is legal to overtake in a tunnel or U-turn at a mini roundabout (but try to avoid it)
  • "Public highway" means any roadway or footway/footpath; "carriageway" means a road (for 1-way or 2-way traffic); "driveway" means a PRIVATE road, often across a footway in front of a house; "motorway" is a special fast road. (See words).
  • “Bear left / right” means curve slightly, instead of turn sharply
