Turning off
When approaching a side road to turn into, use the "hazard routine": Mirrors, Signals, Position, Speed, (Gear), Look [MSPS(G)L].
Use Mirrors when you see the junction. If safe, use a turn-Signal so it’s on at least 3 sec. (Delay it if there's an obstruction or earlier junction first: it shouldn’t confuse, so use your brake signal to create more time if needed).
When you're 2-3 car lengths away, assess how sharp is the corner. (In a manual car, also decide if you need to change Gear: use 2 if normal; 1 if sharp. Bring the clutch up and) Slow so you can ease off the brake before you start steering. |

If turning LEFT, steer when the edge of the road goes into the left of the front windscreen. If turning RIGHT, start when your door mirror points at the middle of the new road. Start to unsteer ½ way round the corner, and gently add power. Check centre and right mirrors to be sure it's safe to speed up (= you're not being overtaken). See my photopage to illustrate.
