LCA's estimates combine manufacturer data with driving style, ambient conditions, and 20-year forecasts for how electricity will be produced in various countries.
61 cars from 2019-21 were tested, covering different sizes, types and drivetrains. For comparisons, a nominal lifetime of 16 yr / 155,000 miles was assumed. This is because, traditionally, auto gearboxes have been fitted to more expensive cars. That trend is changing rapidly as manufacturers convert their ranges to auto (incl. electric) transmission. For example, there are for sale 15,000 autos less than 3 years old but just 30,000 manual (1-in-3).
