How must traffic signs look and be sited ?

20/11/2019

The regulations (that is, the law) and general guidance, are prescribed in the TSRGD. It's periodically updated as needs evolve, and to reduce visual clutter and scope for exceptions. Some significant changes from the 2002 version are :

  • Terminal restriction signs (e.g. speed) can be on only one side of the road
  • Only critical warning signs must be lit
  • 30 mph markings alone can be used as repeater info in a 30 mph zone
  • "Yellow boxes” can be any shape and maximum size
  • Boundary signs can include images
  • Logos can be included on motorway service area signs
These are usefully summarised by one sign manufacturer, who researched how the 2016 version was being used by local authorities (responsible for traffic signs).

Requirements for siting (to be enforceable by police) are in the Traffic Signs Manual. This includes spacing of repeater signs :

Decoding traffic signs : information boards

19/11/2019

Bamboozled by colours, ref numbers, arrows, and boxes on traffic signs when you approach a junction ?  Of course we are.

The picture on this page comes from the official TSRGD 2016.  It shows the very logical thinking by which these info boards are sited on roads, according to how major or minor they are.  The page of words explains the order of place names on a board, use of dividing lines and direction arrows, and why the coloured inset boxes.

Digital marking of the driving test

By mid-October, 20 test examiners (doing 7 tests a day) were using the custom-written app on dedicated iPads.

Candidates need to ensure their DVLA address is up to date when booking the test, though they can change it when they first meet the examiner.
The iPad is set to a lock-down mode before examiners go to the waiting room.  The iPads autosave so will revert to the last user action if a frozen screen necessitates re-boot.  Examiners will have paper copies of the digital test form as back-up.  The app keeps a running total of faults.

Verbal debrief at end of test remains the same.  A paper pass certificate is (currently) still issued.  An
email sent to the candidate, in place of the paper form [DL25], now lists any faults in order of severity.  These have been reaching test candidates within a few minutes.

Benefits include being quicker to record faults than on paper, and the app requiring the examiner to record that legal requirements have been met before moving to the next screen.

Of the 2500 examiners in the UK, about 200 are moving to iPad use each week, so all will be using them by early 2020.

Special needs when learning to drive

Some people may have more difficulty than others when coordinating hands and feet.  Or to absorb what their senses are telling them.  No worries.  We just take learning at a pace to suit you, keep distraction to a minimum, and chat frankly about how things feel each moment.  Or what I can change, to make your learning happen most comfortably.  :)

"I thank you"

How you do express courtesy when driving ?

In daylight, you can nod, smile, or raise a hand to acknowledge courtesy.  But at night ?

Search the web for "driver lamp thanks" or "... courtesy" disappointingly reveals only our interest in self-congratulation for our choice of car, or embellishing our own space.
So I may not need, on my teaching car, to make a corner of the rooftop L-plate box into a simple icon I can make blink to say "Cheers!"  We'll see what effect it has ...
